Health practitioner Dr Andrew Baha, a specialist with the Ghana Health Service under its Institutional Care Division, has offered clarity on the ongoing public discussion about how long sexual intercourse is expected to last for men.
Speaking in an interview on JoyPrime on June 11, 2026, Dr Baha addressed widespread misconceptions surrounding sexual performance duration, explaining that many assumptions in public discourse are not supported by scientific evidence.
He noted that, based on research findings, the typical duration of penetrative intercourse is shorter than many people assume. He stated:
“…Not necessarily, and it depends on a lot of factors. One of the common questions people ask is, ‘How long should a man last? It may interest you to know that it is not what most people think. Scientifically, and based on available evidence, the average duration is between three and seven minutes,” he said.
Dr Baha further emphasized that staying longer in intercourse does not automatically equate to greater sexual satisfaction for partners. According to him, sexual response—particularly among women—is influenced by multiple physical and emotional factors rather than time alone.
He added, “If a man continues for much longer than expected, there can be several issues associated with that. Also, it can be difficult to satisfy a woman sexually because the way women are stimulated and become aroused is quite different from men. For women, it is usually a combination of many factors,” he added.
His comments add to ongoing conversations about sexual health education, especially the need to correct public misconceptions about performance expectations and focus more on mutual satisfaction and understanding within relationships.
