Poverty leaves no option but instant Gratification – Zanetor tells NDC as party Marks 34 Years

The Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has urged the National Democratic Congress to remain mindful that keeping citizens in poverty leaves them with no option but to rely on instant gratification.

Speaking at the NDC’s 34th Anniversary celebration in Accra, Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings emphasized that the party has a duty, especially now that it is in power, to ensure equitable access to and distribution of resources.

She stressed the need for humility among persons placed in positions of authority, noting that all such persons are stewards and servants of the people.

“Everyone, per the Constitution, from the President down to the last appointee and elected member, is supposed to be holding in trust the power of the people,” she said. “So if we truly believe that the National Democratic Congress, at 34 years old, still remembers its origins and still respects those values, it must reflect in how we govern ourselves.”

According to her, the people of Ghana always raise the bar when the NDC is in office because that is the standard the party has established for itself, and it must remain true to it.

Touching on constitutional debates, Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings said she aligns with the school of thought that the problem is not the 1992 Constitution itself, but the way people choose to interpret it and fail to align with the principles of good governance.

“It doesn’t matter how many new constitutions you come up with, or how many laws and rules you enact and institute, if the mindset of the people is that ‘this is democracy, and you can do anything you want, and there are no consequences,’ then there will be no point to any of that,” she stated.

She added that her comments were in support of what the National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, had earlier said about the birth of the 1992 Constitution.
