Court strikes out assault case involving Nyinahin SHS Teacher and student

The Toase District Court has struck out the assault case involving a teacher and a student of Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School after encouraging both parties to pursue an amicable settlement.

The case attracted national attention following the circulation of a viral video showing a physical confrontation between the teacher and the student on the school’s campus.

The teacher, Eric Afful, was seen in the footage repeatedly assaulting a female student before lifting and throwing her to the ground. The incident sparked widespread public outrage and led to his arrest.

When the matter came before the court, the judge advised the parties, together with their families, to consider reconciliation and resolve the dispute through an out-of-court settlement.

Following the court proceedings, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Prof. Elvis Binney, appealed to the public to exercise restraint in commenting on the case.

He urged civil society organisations and members of the public to avoid making prejudicial remarks that could undermine ongoing efforts to resolve the matter peacefully.

Prof. Binney also called on individuals to refrain from issuing threats against Mr Afful, stressing the need to allow due process and reconciliation efforts to take their course.

The incident continues to generate discussion about discipline, student welfare and conflict resolution within Ghana’s educational institutions.
