Man fined and Banned after assaulting Midwife at Tema Polyclinic

A man who assaulted a midwife at the Community 22 Polyclinic in Tema has been convicted by the Community 22 District Court and fined 100 penalty units.

The court also ordered the convict, Desmond Bosomtwe, to pay GHS 5,000 in compensation to the victim, Nurse Priscilla Addo. In addition, he has been barred from entering the health facility for the next 12 months and placed on a bond of good behaviour, effective Tuesday, June 9, the date of judgment.

Speaking to Citi News after the ruling, the Deputy National Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Philemon Gyapong, said the Association had expected a harsher sentence to deter similar incidents in the future, but respected the court’s decision.

“He was made to sign a bond of good behaviour. He’s to pay a compensation of GHS 5,000 to the midwife. The judiciary has acted timeously, and that is what we expected,” he said.

“We had hoped the gentleman would receive a stiffer punishment to serve as a deterrent to others. But that is what the law says, we accept it,” he added.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, when senior staff midwife Priscilla Addo was on duty and approached visitors at the facility to inform them that visiting hours had ended. She reportedly asked them to leave the ward in line with hospital protocols aimed at maintaining a calm environment for patients.

However, Desmond Bosomtwe, a relative of a patient, allegedly refused to comply, leading to a verbal altercation that escalated into physical assault. The incident was captured on video and later circulated widely, prompting public concern and legal action.

Authorities say the conviction forms part of ongoing efforts to protect healthcare workers and ensure safety within medical facilities.
