Two men have been arrested by the Greater Accra Police Command after allegedly attempting to bribe a police officer with GH¢30,000 to secure the release of a truck and suspected narcotic substances seized in Accra.

The suspects, identified as Mark Bangel, a trader from Kpandai in the Oti Region, and Zakaria Arafat, who describes himself as a mechanic from Kpando in the Volta Region, are assisting police with investigations.

According to the police, officers of the Bravo SWAT Unit, acting on intelligence, intercepted a Kia Rhino truck with registration number GN 5581-13 at Abofu near Achimota on Friday, September 11, 2026.

The vehicle was reportedly travelling from Kpandai and was suspected of transporting and distributing narcotic substances in Accra.

The occupants allegedly fled after spotting the police, abandoning the truck and its contents.

A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 175 compressed slabs of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs. The substances were allegedly concealed in three sacks and three “Ghana Must Go” bags.

The truck and the recovered exhibits were taken to the Accra Regional Police Headquarters for further investigation.

The police said Bangel and Arafat later reported to the Regional Police Headquarters, claiming ownership of both the vehicle and the suspected narcotic substances.

Investigators allege that the two men subsequently attempted to influence the Bravo SWAT Unit Commander by offering him GH¢30,000 to facilitate the release of the truck and the seized exhibits.

The alleged bribe money was retrieved by the police, and the two suspects were arrested.

Further investigations have reportedly led to the identification of a third suspect known only as Salam, who the police allege drove the truck and the suspected narcotic substances from Kpandai to Accra.

The police said efforts are underway to apprehend Salam as investigations continue.

The two arrested suspects remain in custody assisting with the investigation, while the suspected narcotic substances and the truck have been retained as exhibits.
