COCOBOD PRO explains Randy Abbey’s absence from Farmers’ Day celebrations
Randy Abbey, Acting Chief Executive of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), was absent from the 2025 National Farmers’ Day celebrations, having reportedly taken leave, COCOBOD’s Public Relations Officer, Jerome K. Sam, has confirmed.
Speaking on Oyerepa Breakfast Time with Kwesi Parker Wilson on Monday, December 8, 2025, Sam explained, “Randy Abbey missed the celebrations because he is on leave.” He emphasised that organising the event does not fall under COCOBOD’s responsibilities.
“It is National Farmers’ Day. Is it not the responsibility of COCOBOD to organise it? The fact is he is on leave,” he said, adding that Abbey’s presence would not have significantly altered the celebrations.
Sam also reiterated Abbey’s commitment to the welfare of Ghanaian farmers. “His absence does not mean he disrespected farmers. Randy Abbey is very concerned about the welfare of Ghanaian farmers,” he stated.
National Farmers’ Day, observed annually on December 5, recognises the contributions of farmers to Ghana’s economy. Cocoa farming, in particular, demands long-term dedication and investment to ensure crop protection and productivity. COCOBOD, the government agency overseeing the crop, regulates prices and provides support to farmers seeking to enter cocoa production.
Abbey, who is also an executive member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), was reportedly in Washington, D.C., USA, during the celebrations. Photos shared online showed him alongside former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan, GFA President Kurt Okraku, former coach Avram Grant, and other Ghanaian representatives.
