OSP releases Martin Kpebu after detention
Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has been released by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) after being detained on Wednesday, December 3—an incident that briefly stalled planned interrogations regarding corruption allegations he has levelled against Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng.
He regained his freedom on Wednesday evening after meeting the bail conditions set by the OSP.
Kpebu had reported to the OSP for a scheduled engagement with investigators but was reportedly arrested following a confrontation with police officers at the entrance. His detention prevented the Special Prosecutor from proceeding with the planned questioning.
According to sources, Kpebu was granted bail on the condition that he provided a landed property as security. However, when his lawyer returned to complete the paperwork, Kpebu was initially nowhere to be found.
The development adds to the escalating tensions between Kpebu and the Special Prosecutor. The outspoken lawyer has frequently criticised the OSP’s handling of investigations, accusing the office of procedural breaches and of assigning sensitive cases to junior officers who report directly to Mr. Agyebeng.
Speaking to journalists before a previous appearance at the OSP last week, Kpebu insisted he would only cooperate if an independently constituted committee handled his case, arguing that the current arrangement undermines fairness and integrity.
He has also cited past concerns over the OSP’s investigation into former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, alleging that the office failed to follow basic procedural requirements in that matter as well.
