Alban Bagbin appointed to Global Taskforce on peaceful resolution of Russia-Ukraine war

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has been appointed to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Taskforce working toward the peaceful resolution of the war in Ukraine.

A statement issued by the Parliamentary Service on October 30, 2025, and signed by the Director of Media Relations, David Sebastian Damoah, said Mr. Bagbin’s selection was based on his integrity, impartiality, and ability to build trust among opposing sides.

According to IPU Secretary-General Martin Chungong, “We are confident that your leadership and experience will strengthen the work of the Taskforce in its mission to support diplomatic efforts for a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine.”

Mr. Bagbin joins seven other parliamentarians representing all six geopolitical groups within the IPU.

Formed in March 2022 as an ad-hoc body, the IPU Taskforce serves as a diplomatic bridge between lawmakers from Ukraine and the Russian Federation. Since its establishment, it has held multiple meetings and conducted a mission to Kyiv and Moscow in July 2022. The Taskforce also facilitates semi-annual consultations with both delegations during IPU Assemblies.

As a member, Speaker Bagbin will participate in key sessions during IPU Assemblies, attend hearings, engage in bilateral talks with Ukrainian and Russian officials, and contribute to peace-focused discussions with global leaders. The Taskforce remains one of the few international platforms where legislators from both nations meet regularly to exchange views amid the ongoing conflict.

The Parliamentary Service noted that Mr. Bagbin’s extensive experience in parliamentary diplomacy and conflict mediation will be instrumental in advancing the Taskforce’s goal of fostering dialogue and understanding.

Established in 1889, the Inter-Parliamentary Union is the global organisation of national parliaments, comprising 180 full members and 15 associate members. Its core mission is to promote peace, democracy, and international cooperation through dialogue and parliamentary engagement.
