The Presidential candidates for Movement for change Mr. Alan K. Kyerematen has condemned the continued incarceration of young protesters from the Democracy Hub, who demonstrated against the government’s inaction on illegal mining (Galamsey).
The founder and leader of Movement for change Alan Kyerematen, stated in categorically that the Democracy Hub demonstrators bail Refusal is a political motivated by the government.
He said the protests exposed the failure of both the current NPP government and the predecessor NDC government to manage Ghana’s natural resources sustainably.
Speaking at a press conference at Ghana International Press center on the arrest of Galamsey protesters, Alan emphasized that the protests were within the constitutional rights of Ghanaians to express opinions and assemble peacefully. However, the police’s decision to charge protesters with “unlawful assembly” after supervising the demonstration for three days is unconstitutional.
Mr Kyerematen called on Attorney General and Minister of Justice, to safeguard the legal rights of young people. He emphasizes the need for the Attorney General to file an application for Nolle Prosequi, effectively terminating the criminal case, or at the very least, not opposing bail or reduced remand periods for accused individuals.
Addressing the youth of Ghana, particularly those who have been arrested, he expressed hope and resilience. “You are the heroes of our time. Despite facing unimaginable hardships, with limited job opportunities and a bleak future, do not lose faith. There is light at the end of the tunnel,” Alan assured.
He therefore encouraged young people to draw inspiration from their challenges, rather than be intimidated by fear. “I stand solidly behind you. Together, we will tackle Galamsey and strive to build a peaceful, prosperous, just, and united Ghana, creating a brighter future for all Ghanaians, especially the youth,” Alan stated.
