A Nutrition Officer with the Builsa North Municipal Directorate of the Ghana Health Service, Mr. Selassie Akanieka Bawa, has urged the citizenry to promote food safety through good hygiene practices to ensure a healthy lifestyle.
He said contaminated food posed a danger to consumers and could lead to various forms of foodborne diseases.
Addressing participants at Azenero Social Center in Sandema on Friday, June 21, 2024, Mr. Akanieka said vigilance on the part of consumers is critical to ensuring food safety.
He noted that food safety is a shared responsibility; individual consumers and food handlers play a huge role in preventing foodborne diseases.
Mr. Akanieka added that food handling is important because unsafe food handling can lead to outbreaks of foodborne illnesses (commonly known as food poisoning).
“I am pleading with the public to avoid food and meat sold in an unhygienic environment, as well as those displayed on the bare floor, for their safety. Food vendors should also stop exposing their customers to dangers,” he added.
He said it was important for all actors in the food value chain to prioritize the health of the final consumer and desist from practices that could compromise the health of the consumer.
