The Ghana High Commission in Pretoria has cautioned Ghanaians living in South Africa to remain vigilant ahead of planned demonstrations linked to immigration concerns.
The advisory follows circulating reports and viral videos showing xenophobic incidents targeting foreign nationals, including Ghanaians, in parts of the country.
In a statement issued on behalf of the High Commissioner, Benjamin Anani Quashie, the mission urged Ghanaian residents to prioritise their safety during this period.
“I urge everyone to continue exercising heightened vigilance and to place the highest priority on personal safety,” the statement emphasised.
The High Commission further advised Ghanaian business owners to temporarily shut their shops and steer clear of areas where protests are expected.
“Shop owners are strongly encouraged to close their businesses for the day and avoid locations where demonstrations are taking place,” it stated.
Nationals were also cautioned against joining any public gatherings that could escalate into confrontations.
“Please refrain from participating in public gatherings that could turn confrontational,” the statement added.
Additionally, Ghanaians were urged to maintain a low profile and act with discretion both in public spaces and online, including avoiding the sharing of content that may be perceived as provocative.
The mission assured that it is closely monitoring the situation and will provide further updates as necessary.
