Kwesi Appiah, a former Black Stars head coach, has clarified why Thomas Partey did not shine at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The Arsenal star player was chastised for his subpar performance at the World Cup.
The 28-year-old played in all three games as Ghana completed the group stage with three points after finishing last in Group H.
According to Appiah, who qualified Ghana for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, Partey is limited at the Black Stars by playing in offensive areas, unlike at Arsenal.
He also stated that the Premier League club gets the most out of the Ghanaian due to his role as a defensive midfielder.
“I would like to use this World Cup. If you look at Arsenal, they use him more like a defensive midfielder, always he plays in front of the defenders,” he told Dan Kweku Yeboah TV.
“But here we use him as an offensive midfielder who operates on the right side. That means he is enclosed in a small area with the number 10 but at Arsenal, he can move all over the place,” he added.
The Black Stars will reassemble in March 2023 for a doubleheader against Angola for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] qualifiers.
