Dr. Eric Bempong, a lecturer at KAAF University, has strongly criticised the leadership of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) over reports that the party intends to issue an official apology to former President John Dramani Mahama on behalf of its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
The apology stems from a series of derogatory comments Wontumi allegedly made about President Mahama in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections—remarks that circulated widely on social media and drew sharp criticism from both the public and within the party ranks.
Dr. Bempong expressed his disapproval during a panel discussion on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, hosted by Akua Asieduwa, questioning the sincerity and timing of the NPP’s planned apology.
“I personally like Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie,” he said, referring to the Effiduase Asokore MP who confirmed the party’s intent to apologise, “but I must disagree with his approach. Would Wontumi have been happy if such comments had been directed at him?”
Dr. Bempong further questioned whether the apology was truly about addressing misconduct or simply damage control in the face of public backlash.
“When exactly did Wontumi make those comments?” he asked. “Where were the NPP leaders when he was making them? Was it only after the damage to Mahama’s image became evident that they realised an apology was necessary? Are we to believe no one in the NPP hierarchy heard him speak?”
He accused the party of turning a blind eye to the inflammatory language when it first emerged and challenged the moral grounds of issuing an apology only after facing public pressure.
