Mr. Evans Nunoo, an Economist and Financial Analyst, has expressed his concern regarding the two major political parties in Ghana, namely the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He believes that these parties have taken the Ghanaian population for granted, primarily due to the significant number of “inferior votes” they receive during elections.

During an interview on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Mr Nunoo highlighted that many Ghanaian voters do not consider important factors when casting their votes. Instead, their reasons for voting are based on inferior criteria, leading them to support either the NPP or the NDC without proper evaluation.

This unfortunate situation, according to Mr Nunoo, has hindered the development of the country.

The two major parties have come to realize that, regardless of their performance, the Ghanaian voters remain satisfied with them. This complacency has resulted in a lack of progress and development for Ghana as a whole.

“The problem has to do with inferior votes. People vote not based on any proper means. And the politicians have realized that, should they decide to do something that would be beneficial to the citizens in the future; they (Politicians) might lose elections. For this reason, they turn to do things that will give them instant votes. So politicians do the wrong thing every time to get votes and Ghanaians seem to be very happy with it.” He said.

He explained that, when examining the voting patterns in Ghana, it becomes evident that voters have come to accept that there are no viable alternative political parties aside from NDC/NPP. The people seem to prioritize a political party that can deliver short-term development rather than focusing on long-term growth. It is based on this premise that politicians are more inclined to prioritize actions that will secure immediate votes.

“If our governments are getting eight years and we’re not complaining much, it means that we have a lot of inferior votes in the system and so they (politicians) are comfortable with it. And they are serving those people.
“The majority of the inferior votes in the system, politicians want to satisfy them otherwise if they were to be punished for doing the wrong thing, they would begin to do the right thing.”

“Generally, Ghanaians have accepted that, we don’t have any other fine minds apart from the two political parties that we have (NDC/NPP) and so we aren’t going anywhere and they know that we like them. So for now, nothing seems to be working, we’re comfortable with it.” He indicated.
