The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Ghana, has suspended its indefinite strike, which began on September 19, 2025, over the delay in signing new Conditions of Service agreements.
The union, representing non-teaching staff across the Ghana Education Service, public and technical universities, the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, and the Ghana Library Authority, announced the suspension at a press briefing on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.
General Secretary King James Azortibah said the decision followed constructive engagements with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), the Ministry of Labour and Employment, and employer institutions. He explained that both sides had agreed to continue negotiations, with a follow-up meeting scheduled for Tuesday, October 7, 2025.
“All TEWU members in the affected institutions are expected to resume work by Thursday, October 2, 2025, while those who traveled outside their duty stations must return by Monday, October 6, 2025,” Mr. Azortibah stated.
He emphasized that the move was a suspension, not a full call-off, warning that the union would not hesitate to resume the strike if commitments are not fulfilled. TEWU also cautioned against any victimization of its members for participating in the industrial action, assuring them of full union protection against unfair labour practices.
The leadership commended members, management of educational institutions, and the media for their support during the nine-day strike, describing the action as impactful and a strong demonstration of the power of collective bargaining.
