The Upper West Regional Police Command has arrested seven individuals for allegedly engaging in illegal mining activities along the Black Volta River in the Wa West District.
The suspects five men and two women were apprehended on Thursday, April 10, during a police operation at Chiantanga, a community near Dorimon.
They have been identified as Sabugu Razak, Ibrahim Zuberu, Alex Amedzake, John Cobblah, Promise Dufe, Angelina Akpese, and Rebecca Tumawu.
According to police reports, several items believed to be linked to illegal mining operations were seized at the scene.
These include ten Changfang mining machines, two unregistered tricycles (PNE and Apsonic brands), four motorbikes two of which were unregistered and six student mattresses, suggesting the suspects may have been living at the site.
In a statement, the Police noted that all suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue. Authorities have assured the public that individuals found culpable will be prosecuted in accordance with Ghanaian law.
The Police also reiterated their commitment to curbing illegal mining and protecting the country’s natural resources.
