The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has established a nine-member committee to review its constitution, following the submission of a comprehensive post-election report by the Prof. Mike Oquaye-led committee investigating the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.
This decision was made during an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Wednesday, April 16, at the Alisa Hotel in Accra. At the meeting, Prof. Oquaye formally presented the findings of the 12-member investigative committee tasked with examining the reasons behind the party’s electoral loss to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by John Dramani Mahama.
The report also addressed the NPP’s significant decline in parliamentary representation, with the party losing 50 seats and its majority in Parliament.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong announced the formation of the new nine-member constitutional review committee. He stated that the move was aimed at addressing structural and constitutional issues raised in the Oquaye Committee’s report.
“The National Council has received the report, but this is only the beginning. We must reflect, deliberate, and take concrete steps to reform. The committee will examine areas of the party’s constitution that require amendments based on the report’s recommendations,” Mr. Frimpong said.
He assured party members and the public that the full contents and recommendations of the report would be communicated in due course.
“We’ve just received the report today, April 16. In the coming days, we will study it in detail and share key insights with our grassroots and the general public,” he added.
Mr. Frimpong also cautioned party members against making speculative or premature public statements about the report’s content.
“We urge our members to refrain from assumptions or public commentary not grounded in the actual report. Let’s allow due process to guide our response,” he emphasized.
As part of broader efforts to rebuild and reconnect with supporters, the General Secretary revealed that the party leadership would soon embark on a nationwide tour to engage with the grassroots and share feedback.
The NEC meeting was attended by several high-ranking party officials, including former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, 2024 presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and other senior executives.
