NPP must focus on returning to power in 2029 — Bawumia to MPs
New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Mahamudu Bawumia has called on the party’s Minority Caucus in Parliament to reposition the NPP as a credible alternative government ahead of the 2029 general elections.
Addressing Minority Members of Parliament during a pre-Parliament briefing ahead of the resumption of the Second Meeting of the Second Session of the Ninth Parliament, Dr. Bawumia said the party had moved beyond the period of post-election reflection following its defeat in the 2024 polls.
According to him, the NPP must now focus on rebuilding public confidence and presenting itself as a disciplined and prepared political force capable of returning to power.
“We have finished the period of introspection. We must now position ourselves credibly as a party preparing to govern from 7th January 2029,” he told the MPs.
Dr. Bawumia stressed that the Minority should no longer operate as a defeated political group but rather as a united parliamentary caucus ready to provide leadership and direction.
He urged the legislators to ensure that their conduct in Parliament, public engagements, and communication with constituents project competence and readiness to govern again.
The NPP flagbearer further reminded the caucus of what he described as the party’s achievements in government, including the National Health Insurance Scheme, the Free Senior High School policy, the School Feeding Programme, and the Youth Employment Programme.
He encouraged MPs to confidently promote the party’s legacy while working to regain the trust of Ghanaians.
“We must always project this posture, that we are a party preparing to govern. This will send a strong and well-meaning message to the people of Ghana,” he stated.
Dr. Bawumia also pledged his direct involvement in supporting the Minority Caucus to achieve its parliamentary objectives.
According to him, the party is strengthening its internal structures through sector committees to ensure coordination and consistency in messaging and strategy.
“I will be directly involved in supporting you to achieve this. The entire party is also building a strong architecture to support you through the sector committees, so that we sing from the same hymn sheet and act with a coordinated strategy at every point in time,” he said.
The meeting is considered one of Dr. Bawumia’s most significant engagements with the parliamentary wing of the party since emerging as the NPP’s presidential candidate and is expected to shape the Minority’s approach in Parliament going forward.
