NDC delegation leaves NPP conference over delayed start

A delegation from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has left the New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Delegates Conference in Kumasi after waiting several hours for the programme to begin.

The NDC team, led by Deputy National Organiser Dzifa Tsegah, arrived at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium at about 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2026, to deliver a solidarity message to the NPP ahead of its national elections.

However, with the conference yet to commence by nearly 2 p.m., the delegation decided to leave the venue to attend other scheduled engagements.

Speaking to the media before her departure, Ms Tsegah expressed disappointment over the delay and said the situation raised concerns about the organisation of the conference.

“We were here half past 9 a.m., it’s almost 2 p.m. and we have been waiting and it doesn’t look like they are ready,” she said.

She explained that the NDC delegation had come to wish the NPP well in its internal elections and to demonstrate the importance of political parties maintaining a cordial relationship in Ghana’s democracy.

According to her, Ghana needs a strong opposition capable of effectively holding the government accountable.

“I really hope this election will pull the best out of them because we need a strong opposition to make sure democracy is alive and on its toes,” she said.

Ms Tsegah said the NDC delegation could not continue waiting because members had other engagements to attend.

The NPP National Delegates Conference, being held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, has brought together 7,163 delegates from across the country to elect the party’s national officers and consider proposed amendments to its constitution.

A total of 45 candidates are contesting nine key national positions.

The conference was originally scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., although the start was delayed amid reports of delegates arriving late at the venue.
