Akweteyman fire destroys family’s belongings, 12 nearby apartments saved

A family at Akweteyman in Accra has been left counting its losses after a late-night fire destroyed all personal belongings in their three-chamber-and-hall apartment.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said the incident occurred on Thursday, October 1, 2026, after the Legon Fire Station received an emergency alert through the Fire Master Control at about 10:20 p.m.

Firefighters arrived at the scene approximately 20 minutes later and began efforts to contain the blaze.

The fire, however, had already spread through the apartment, destroying clothes, furniture, electrical appliances and other household items.

The flames were brought under control at about 11:20 p.m., with the fire finally extinguished at midnight.

Despite the extensive damage to the affected apartment, firefighters successfully prevented the blaze from spreading to 12 neighbouring chamber-and-hall apartments and their contents.

No injuries were reported.

The GNFS is investigating the cause of the fire.
