NCA marks 2026 World Telecom Day, Pledges better service and public reporting of network performance
The National Communications Authority (NCA) has joined the rest of the world to mark the 2026 World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) at its headquarters, the NCA Towers in Accra.
Speaking to stakeholders in the telecommunications industry, the Director-General of the NCA, Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko, assured Ghanaians of improved service quality and expanded coverage across the country.
He noted that with the growing number of subscribers, many consumers have complained that the service they pay for does not match what they receive, whether for calls or internet connectivity.
To address this, Rev. Ing. Fianko charged service operators to close the coverage gap in both urban and rural communities. “The service that is paid for must be the service received,” he said.
As part of efforts to improve accountability, he announced that the NCA will begin publishing performance data of telecom operators. The data will show, network by network, how each operator is performing against their regulatory obligations.
“An informed consumer is the operator’s strongest ally,” he stated. “The Authority will monitor delivery against timelines and facilitate regulatory and inter-agency engagement to ensure that every obstacle is removed.”
WTISD is observed annually on May 17 to raise awareness on the role of telecommunications and ICT in society and to promote access to information and communication technologies.
