The Minister for Communications, Digitalisation, and Innovation, Hon. Sam George has cautioned Ghanaians against fraudulent job offers made in the names of government officials, emphasizing that no MP or minister will ever reach out on social media to offer employment opportunities.Sustainable tourism experiences
He revealed that he personally dealt with a case of impersonation earlier in the day, where someone was falsely using his identity to offer immigration jobs in a speech delivered on the floor of parliament.
He urged the public to remain vigilant and avoid falling victim to such scams.
“Let’s use this opportunity to state emphatically that no Member of Parliament or minister of state will reach out to you on social media to offer you a job. Any such approach is a scam,” he declared, stressing the need for public sensitization.
Sam George also highlighted the challenges of tackling online fraud, particularly on social media platforms like Facebook.
He recounted how, two years ago, he personally reported multiple fake accounts impersonating him, leading to the removal of 25 accounts within 24 hours. However, within another 48 hours, 40 new fake accounts had emerged.
The MP expressed frustration with Facebook’s response to such complaints, noting that even verified users often receive notifications that fraudulent posts cannot be taken down.
He called for stronger digital security measures and urged Ghana to take the lead in advocating for a robust data protection regime for Africa.
“This issue goes beyond Ghana. We need to lead the charge for Africa to have a proper data protection regime. It’s one thing for Ghana to engage Meta, a trillion-dollar multinational, and another for Africa to speak with a collective voice,” he stated.
