Dr. Enoch Acheampong, a Senior lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in the Department of Health Promotion, Education, and Disability, has claimed that opposition to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s digitalisation agenda was largely within the government sector
According to him, the workers opposed the great initiative due to their selfish interests, bribery and corruption.
Speaking on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Dr. Acheampong stated that many government officials were against key digital initiatives, such as online passport applications and digital driver’s licenses, because these systems eliminate opportunities for bribery.
He said some officials prefer face-to-face interactions, as they create avenues to demand unofficial payments before processing documents and services.
“Most people in the government sector were opposed to Bawumia and his digitalisation agenda, including initiatives like online passport applications and digital driver’s licenses. Their resistance stemmed from the fact that digitisation would eliminate opportunities for bribery, as online processes reduce the need for face-to-face interactions, which some officials exploit for personal gain,” he stated.
Dr. Acheampong explained that the manual processing of government services has, for years, provided a breeding ground for corruption. Citizens seeking essential documents are often forced to pay middlemen or bribes to speed up services that should otherwise be accessible to all.
He emphasized that digitalisation removes these bottlenecks, ensuring a more transparent and efficient system.
