Man arrested after threatening security personnel in viral video

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a man who appeared in a viral video wearing a mask and issuing threats against police officers and soldiers over the arrest of suspected armed robbers in the Ashanti Region.

The suspect, identified as Opoku Emmanuel, was arrested on May 7, 2026, at Jacobu in the Amansie Central District during a joint operation by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team (CVET) and officers from the Jacobu Police Command.

According to a statement issued by the Police, the suspect was captured in the viral video warning security personnel against arresting armed robbery suspects and allegedly threatening to kill any officer who attempted to confront him.

Police say Opoku Emmanuel is currently in custody assisting investigations and is expected to be put before court in due course.

The arrest forms part of ongoing operations by the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team targeting individuals who issue threats against public officials and state institutions on social media platforms.

The earlier video, which circulated widely on TikTok and Facebook, showed the suspect warning that any police officer or soldier who attempted to arrest armed robbers without “spiritual protection” — popularly referred to as “juju” — risked being shot and killed.

In a subsequent video, he apologised and claimed the statements were made in the course of content creation and were not intended as real threats.

Police say the case is being handled under relevant provisions of the Cybersecurity Act, 2020, the Criminal Offences Act, 1960, and the Electronic Transactions Act, 2008, which provide sanctions for such offences.

Authorities have yet to announce a specific date for his court appearance.
