Mahama orders evacuation of 300 Ghanaians following xenophobic attacks in South Africa
President John Dramani Mahama has approved the immediate evacuation of 300 Ghanaians living in South Africa following renewed xenophobic attacks reported in some parts of the country.
The evacuation exercise will be coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in partnership with Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria.
According to government sources, the affected individuals are among Ghanaians who responded to an earlier advisory issued by the Foreign Ministry, encouraging citizens in South Africa to register with the High Commission if they required assistance or evacuation amid rising tensions and attacks targeting foreign nationals.
The 300 approved evacuees reportedly completed the registration process after renewed incidents of violence and insecurity were reported in several communities.
Government says the intervention is part of efforts to protect Ghanaian citizens abroad and ensure their safe return home.
The Mahama administration has reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare, safety and protection of Ghanaians both at home and abroad.
Further details regarding the evacuation process and timelines are expected to be announced in the coming days.
