Greater Accra NADMO Director Demands Dismissal of Ablekuma West MCE, Physical Planning Officers Over Flooded Homes

The Greater Accra Regional Director of NADMO, Dennis Martey Adjannor, has called on the President to dismiss the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ablekuma West, Hon. George Emmanuel Kpakpo Allotey, together with officials of the Physical Planning Department, over what he describes as negligence that contributed to severe flooding in parts of the municipality.

According to him, authorities responsible for supervising developments and issuing building permits have failed to enforce regulations preventing people from building in waterways, a situation that continues to expose residents to flooding whenever there is heavy rainfall.

Parts of the Ablekuma West Municipality in the Greater Accra Region were submerged after several hours of heavy rainfall, leaving many residents displaced in the Lafa community, a suburb of Dansoman.

Reports indicate that the flooding situation was worsened by the alleged construction of buildings in waterways, obstructing the free flow of water in the area.

Several homes were inundated by the rains, forcing affected residents to abandon their properties.

During a working visit to the community, Mr. Adjannor expressed disappointment in the conduct of the MCE and Physical Planning officials, accusing them of failing to effectively carry out their responsibilities.

He stressed that the continued unauthorised construction in waterways points to a lack of proper supervision and enforcement of building regulations within the municipality.

Meanwhile, some residents displaced by the floods also expressed concern over the increasing rate of construction in waterways, which they say continues to worsen the flooding situation in the area.

The residents appealed to the President and relevant authorities to take immediate action by demolishing all structures obstructing waterways and constructing proper drainage systems to prevent future flooding.
