“Give us permission to beat litterers” — Keche Andrew reacts to Accra floods

Ghanaian musician Andrew Cudjoe, popularly known as Keche Andrew of the music group Keche, has stirred public debate after commenting on the recent floods that have disrupted parts of Accra, linking the situation to poor sanitation habits among residents.

The artiste, speaking in a light-hearted but pointed video on TikTok, suggested that authorities should consider empowering citizens to take a more aggressive stance against indiscriminate dumping, which he believes is worsening the city’s drainage challenges.

“I want to go to the police stations and ask if they can issue licences for people to discipline others, because at this point we all need to police ourselves to stop flooding,” he said.

He went further to suggest that people who are caught dumping waste into gutters or water channels should face immediate consequences before being handed over to law enforcement.

“When you see anyone dump refuse in gutters, in cars, or into water bodies, we should catch them and discipline them. Afterwards, you take them to the police station. That is what we need to do,” he added.

Keche Andrew argued that the recurring flooding in Accra is not only a result of heavy rainfall but also deeply tied to human negligence. He criticised residents who deliberately dispose of waste into drains, as well as those who wait for rainfall to wash rubbish into waterways, a habit that often leads to blocked drainage systems and worsening floods.

“Our attitude is part of the recent floods; we dump refuse anywhere,” he said.

His remarks, though delivered humorously, have triggered widespread discussion online, with many users agreeing that irresponsible waste disposal contributes significantly to Accra’s flooding crisis, while others cautioned against endorsing violence as a solution to environmental problems.

The conversation adds to ongoing concerns about urban sanitation in Ghana’s capital, where flooding has become a recurring challenge linked to both infrastructure gaps and public behaviour.
