“Work first, marry later” — Singer Akwaboah’s advice ignites reactions

Ghanaian highlife artiste Gladstorm Kwabena Akwaboah Jnr, popularly known in showbiz as Akwaboah, has once again stirred conversation around relationships and marriage after advising young people to secure financial stability before walking down the aisle.

The award-winning singer made the remark in a post on X dated June 30, 2026, where he suggested that love alone is not enough foundation for marriage if economic preparation is missing. According to him, many relationship struggles could be avoided if couples focused on building their careers and income sources first before committing to lifelong partnerships.

He wrote: “Work before you marry, ooo… yoooo.”

Akwaboah, who is widely known for blending romantic themes with life lessons in his music, has over the years positioned himself as a vocal advocate for honesty and emotional responsibility in relationships. His latest comment has therefore been interpreted by fans as a continuation of his long-standing stance on practical love decisions.

This is not the first time he has openly challenged how people approach relationships. Back in 2023, he criticized what he described as dishonesty among some men in romantic relationships, especially those who mislead women about their true intentions. In a strongly worded social media post at the time, he argued that clarity and truth should guide romantic engagements.

He stated: “If you want to sleep with a woman, let the woman know you want to sleep with her, and if you want to marry her, make sure you marry her.”

His comments continue to generate mixed reactions online, with some agreeing that financial readiness is essential for stable marriages, while others argue that love should not be delayed by economic conditions.
