Ghana Begins Repatriation of 327 Citizens Stranded After Demolition in Côte d’Ivoire

The Government of Ghana has begun the evacuation and return of 327 Ghanaian nationals who were left stranded in Côte d’Ivoire following a demolition exercise in the Port Bouët Municipality of Abidjan.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, June 12, 2026, explained that the affected citizens lost their homes and means of livelihood after structures they occupied were demolished by local authorities.

According to the Ministry, 228 of the stranded Ghanaians have already been brought back home safely, arriving in Ghana on Thursday, June 11, 2026. The remaining 99 individuals are scheduled to return on Friday, June 12.

The repatriation process, the Ministry noted, forms part of government’s immediate intervention to support citizens affected by the incident and ensure their safe return and reintegration.

It further explained that all 327 individuals were residing in communities affected by the demolition exercise and were subsequently left without shelter or financial means to continue living in Côte d’Ivoire.

In addition to the evacuation effort, the Government of Ghana is also engaging Ivorian authorities on compensation for the affected nationals.

“The Ministry further wishes to acknowledge that Ivorian authorities have expressed their desire to compensate the victims of their demolition exercise and shall therefore remain actively engaged on the matter to ensure that the promised compensation is received by our affected nationals,” the statement said. It added that Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Abidjan will continue coordinating efforts to support the process.

The Ministry assured that it will maintain diplomatic engagement with Côte d’Ivoire to ensure that any promised compensation is fully honoured and that the welfare of the affected citizens is adequately addressed.

Ghana’s embassy in Abidjan, it added, will continue to work with relevant authorities to facilitate ongoing coordination and resolve outstanding concerns relating to the affected nationals.
