The Spokesperson for the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Mahmud Kabore, has urged Ghanaians to shift their perception of illegal miners, commonly referred to as galamseyers, stating that they should not be viewed as enemies of the state but as potential partners in sustainable development.
Speaking on Oyerepa Breakfast Time ahead of the official launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme in Obuasi, Mr. Kabore emphasised that with the right training, resources, and policy support, galamseyers can be transformed into responsible miners and champions of environmentally sound mining practices.
“Galamseyers should not be seen as enemies. With the right training and support, they can become allies of development and champions of responsible mining. Let’s give those with a little knowledge the requisite skills and teach them modern technological ways in mining,” he stressed.
He explained that the Ministry, through its agencies, is ready to support these miners by providing access to modern equipment either at subsidised costs or through instalment payment schemes.
Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme
The Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme, set to be launched this Wednesday in Obuasi, forms part of the government’s broader strategy to tackle illegal mining while promoting sustainable livelihoods.
The initiative will focus on training local miners in modern mining technologies, environmental safety, and cooperative business models to ensure they operate within legal and sustainable frameworks. It is also designed to empower miners with practical skills and equipment, helping them transition from informal operations to regulated and responsible enterprises.
Mr. Kabore reiterated the government’s commitment to curbing illegal mining but stressed that this must be done by offering alternatives and integrating small-scale miners into the formal economy.
The programme is expected to be a major step forward in addressing the long-standing tension between law enforcement agencies and illegal miners, while promoting responsible resource management, job creation, and rural development.
