Former Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Kesson-Smith Osei, has expressed concern that late President John Evans Atta Mills would be disheartened by the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining (galamsey) and the toxic partisanship in Ghana’s politics.
Delivering the keynote address at the 13th Anniversary Commemorative Lecture of the late president Atta Mills at UPSA, Madam Charlotte Osei said current developments reflect a stark contrast to the values and principles President Mills stood for.
Osei described President Mills as a man of peace, dignity, and humility, and called for a recommitment to national unity, responsible governance, and sustainable development.
While expressing concerns, she highlighted positive strides that would have brought President Mills joy, including his family’s continued strength and the accomplishments of his former students and mentees.
“I think he would be outraged at how we are permitting galamsey to damage our environment and our future,” Osei said. However, she added that President Mills would be proud of his family’s well-being, the achievements of his mentees, and the party’s return to power, as well as the appointment of Ghana’s first female Vice President.
Charlotte Osei, a former student of late President Mills, urged Ghanaians to honour President Mills’ memory by continuing his work and committing to his vision of a better future.
