Ghana’s long-running debate over who deserves the Dancehall King crown has resurfaced, with dancehall heavyweight Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., popularly known as Shatta Wale, refusing to let awards alone determine who owns the title.

The latest exchange occurred during a TikTok Live session when a fan challenged Shatta Wale over his continued use of the title despite the achievements of his long-time rival, Livingstone Etse Satekla, known professionally as Stonebwoy.

The fan argued that Stonebwoy’s impressive record in reggae and dancehall categories, including several honours from Ghana and other African award schemes, should put him ahead of Shatta Wale.

“I want to know, what makes you the Dancehall King over Stonebwoy? I am asking this because when it comes to Ghana, Stonebwoy has about 10 reggae/dancehall awards to his credit. He also has about three or four in Africa,” he said.

Shatta Wale, however, declined to engage in an awards-based comparison. Instead, he used traditional chieftaincy to explain why different people may recognise different artistes as their preferred king.

“That’s a good question, but you know we have the Asantehene and the Ga Mantse. So, you can make anyone your king, considering where you come from,” he stated.

The ‘On God’ hitmaker further indicated that he had no intention of defending his status by presenting a catalogue of awards.

“This isn’t an argument, and I didn’t come here to explain to anyone the number of awards I have won,” he added.

The rivalry between Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy has been a defining storyline in Ghana’s dancehall scene for years, with both artistes building large fan bases and repeatedly staking their claims to dominance.

Their 2019 clash at the VGMA Awards further intensified the rivalry narrative, although both musicians have occasionally played down suggestions that they are genuine enemies.

Shatta Wale’s latest response suggests that the Dancehall King debate remains a matter of personal allegiance and interpretation rather than something he believes can be settled simply by counting trophies.
