Court grants Abronye bail
The Accra High Court has granted bail to the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe Abronye, in the sum of GH¢100,000 with two sureties.
He was granted bail following his arrest and detention by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) on May 13.
As part of the bail conditions, his travel documents have been seized, preventing him from leaving the country while investigations continue.
The ruling follows proceedings on Wednesday, May 20, when the court adjourned the case after the prosecution requested additional time to file its response to the bail application.
Abronye is facing two charges, namely offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace and publication of false news.
During the hearing, counsel for the accused, Daniel Amartey Addo, led by former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame, opposed the prosecution’s request for an adjournment, arguing that the Republic had already been served with the bail application on May 14, 2026.
Assistant State Attorney Grace Delali Tali, however, told the court that although service was effected on May 14, the period constituted three clear days rather than six, as required.
She conceded that the application was ripe for hearing but argued that the prosecution needed time to consult investigators and properly respond to the motion.
In its ruling, the court granted the prosecution’s request, stating that it had considered the need for fairness while balancing the rights of the accused person.
The case has attracted public and political attention, given Abronye’s prominence as one of the outspoken regional executives of the NPP.
