“I have a third eye” – Sister Derby reveals unusual gift
Ghanaian musician Deborah Vanessa Owusu-Bonsu, popularly known as Sister Derby, has opened up about what she describes as a spiritual gift that enables her to experience visions of events before they occur.
The singer and model said she believes she possesses a “third eye”, a gift she claims she has experienced from childhood and now uses mainly to guide and safeguard herself and people close to her.
According to Sister Derby, her father has repeatedly encouraged her to develop the ability further, but she has no interest in turning it into a source of income or using it for public recognition.
“Even my father, up till this day, he tells me that I am not developing my gift because he is trying to pull me into the ‘crife’ side. Who told you I don’t use it? If I don’t want to use it to make money, that’s a different thing. If I feel like it is natural and I use it for my friends and things around me, I use it to protect myself. It’s fine. If I have a vision about someone and the person is not my friend, I can have positive thoughts for them. I can pray for them. I don’t need to go around boasting about it or talking about it,” she said.
Sister Derby recalled what she described as her strongest childhood experience of the phenomenon, involving a road accident in Akosombo when she was about seven years old.
She said she suddenly recognised the unfolding crash from a dream she had experienced earlier, even as the accident was taking place.
“I can see things. I probably do have a third eye because my parents can testify to it. The vivid ones I remember, we had a car accident when I was about age seven, and as the accident was happening, I was sort of asleep, as in, I had just drifted off. I remembered that I had dreamt of seeing exactly that. I had had that exact dream,” she added.
She said the vehicle was being driven by her elder brother Emmanuel Owusu-Bonsu, popularly known as Wanlov the Kubolor, who was only 11 at the time. Sister Derby explained that the situation arose after the adult driver, whom she said was intoxicated, handed the vehicle to Wanlov.
“We had a car accident as kids in Akosombo. I remember because Wanlov was driving. Wanlov was 11, and he was driving, but he was not supposed to be driving, obviously. The driver was drunk, so he gave the car to Wanlov.” she revealed.
According to Sister Derby, her recollection of the dream helped her remain unusually composed during the crash, although she suffered injuries.
“As the accident was happening, I was seated with my hands on the front seat, remembering that I had seen this in a dream. When we got to the hospital, I was the only one not panicking or crying, but my gums were all torn, and there was blood all over,” she noted.
Her account adds another unusual dimension to the public persona of the musician, who has often been outspoken about personal beliefs and experiences. Sister Derby maintains that whatever the nature of the ability may be, she prefers to use it privately rather than exploit it for money or attention.
