Bawumia visits Ntim Fordjour after attempted arrest
On April 9, 2025, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 general elections, paid a solidarity visit to Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, Member of Parliament for Assin South and Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee. The visit followed what is being described as an attempted politically motivated arrest by state security operatives.
In a post shared on social media, Rev. Ntim Fordjour thanked the former Vice President for his support during what he termed a period of “political harassment.”
“Thank you very much, H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia (@MBawumia), for the visit to my residence this evening following the politically motivated, lawless act of harassment by the NDC government in their attempt to gag MPs from exercising their legitimate oversight,” he wrote.
According to reports, operatives from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) stormed Rev. Fordjour’s residence in what appeared to be an attempt to arrest him. The reasons behind the attempted arrest remain unclear but come shortly after the MP made explosive allegations involving suspected drug trafficking and money laundering.
Rev. Fordjour recently claimed at an April 1 press conference that two aircraft — a private jet and an air ambulance — were possibly involved in illicit activities. One of the flights, Air MED L823 AM, reportedly landed at Kotoka International Airport on March 20 and remained there for five days without evidence of transporting any patient.
As news of the attempted arrest spread, several top NPP officials, including Members of Parliament and party executives, quickly gathered at Rev. Fordjour’s residence to prevent the arrest. The NIB operatives reportedly left after the show of resistance.
Speaking on behalf of the NPP leadership, Minority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo confirmed that about 20 NIB officers had surrounded the premises but eventually withdrew.
“We will not allow any of our members to be intimidated or harassed by the John Dramani Mahama government,” he said. Afenyo emphasized that the NPP caucus—referred to as “The Mighty Minority”—is fully behind Rev. Fordjour.
In response to the drug trafficking allegations, President John Dramani Mahama has called for full cooperation between security agencies and Rev. Fordjour in investigating the claims.
“Ghana has a zero-tolerance policy for drug trafficking, and we will not allow the country to be used as a transit point or final destination for illicit drugs,” the president said.
He directed all relevant national security agencies to work closely with the Assin South MP to uncover the facts surrounding the suspicious flights.
As investigations continue, the nation watches closely, with rising political tensions and both major parties standing firm in their respective positions. The coming days are expected to be critical in determining the direction and credibility of one of the country’s most controversial security and political episodes in recent memory.
