Dr. Nicolas Kofi Nti, a lecturer at Christian Service University College, has shed light on the reasons behind the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss in the recent by-election in the Assin North Constituency of the Central Region.
According to Dr. Nti, President Akufo-Addo played a significant role in the defeat of Charles Opoku, the NPP parliamentary candidate.
During his campaign tour in the Assin North by-election, President Akufo-Addo urged the constituents not to vote for Gyakye Quayson, a candidate who could potentially face imprisonment in the future. However, in a slip of the tongue, he mistakenly stated that Charles Opoku, the NPP candidate, was not worthy of becoming an MP for the constituency and should be vehemently voted against.
As a result, James Gyakye Quayson, the candidate from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), emerged victorious in the Assin North by-election with 57.56% of the votes.
Speaking on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, hosted by Akua Asieduwaa, the lecturer indicated that, President Akufo-Addo’s presence in Assin North was unnecessary, stating that, he was the reason Charles Opoku lost the polls.
Dr Nicolas Kofi Nti said, a lot of factors contributed to the NPP’s defeat but he believes that the President’s assertions infuriated the electorates who eventually voted against the NPP.
“I think it was unnecessary for the President to campaign in Assin North. How the NPP treated Quayson, the things they said about him and moreover, Akufo-Addo’s chicky affirmations riled the people thereby voting for the NDC candidate.
If you climb up the platform to talk to people, you must tone down, you must not say things that will irritate the people.” He said.
