The Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association has issued a September 1 ultimatum to foreign shop owners to meet and discuss retail business guidelines. Failure to comply will result in shop closures.
Speaking to the media at their annual General Meeting, President of Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association, Mr. Henry Okyere Jr., explains that this action is due to the government’s failure to enforce the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre’s Act (Act 865), which prohibits foreigners from retail business.
The Association aims to protect Ghanaian retailers who pay high costs, including rent, store charges, and duties on imported goods. The Association believes this move is long overdue and necessary to safeguard the interests of Ghanaian retailers in the Abossey Okai area.
Mrs. Gifty Fianu, General Secretary of the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association, expressed concerns that foreigners, particularly Nigerians, are dominating the retail space in Abossey Okai.
She warned that if left unchecked, foreign nationals may take over the retail space meant for Ghanaians.
Mrs. Fianu urged government agencies responsible for enforcing retail space regulations to fully implement Act 865 of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre’s Act, which is enshrined in the country’s constitution.
She emphasized the need for strict enforcement to protect Ghanaian retailers’ interests.
