A journalist with Accra-based GHOne TV, Banahene Agyekum, was allegedly assaulted by a police inspector while covering the ongoing parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North Constituency.
The incident reportedly occurred at the Church of Pentecost polling station in Odorkor, where Agyekum was on duty reporting on the election proceedings.
Sharing his account during an interview on Adom FM, the journalist said he was performing his regular duties when a police inspector approached and ordered him to leave the polling station. Despite other journalists being present in the same area, Agyekum said he was singled out without explanation.
“I even showed him my ID card to prove that I am a journalist, justifying why I couldn’t leave—then he slapped me,” Agyekum recounted.
A video widely circulated by Original TV captures the tense exchange, showing the police officer visibly agitated as fellow officers attempt—unsuccessfully—to calm him down.
According to Agyekum, the officer displayed aggressive behavior throughout the encounter. He also revealed that the same officer had earlier confronted the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo, in a similar manner, retreating only after bystanders identified the mayor.
As of the time of reporting, Agyekum has not yet filed an official complaint regarding the incident.
