Ablekuma North Rerun: Former MP Hawa Koomson assaulted at polling station
Former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East and ex-Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has reportedly been physically assaulted during a violent disturbance at the Odorkor Methodist Church polling station—one of 19 centres involved in the ongoing Ablekuma North parliamentary election rerun.
Viral video footage circulating on social media shows a chaotic scene in which a group of unidentified men—believed to be political thugs—stormed the polling station and overpowered police personnel stationed there.
In the footage, the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP is seen being knocked to the ground, kicked, and dragged by some of the attackers, as chaos erupted at the polling centre. Several men in plain clothing are seen engaging in violent altercations, while police and members of Hawa Koomson’s alleged security detail attempted to shield her from further harm.
She was eventually rescued and whisked away from the scene by security operatives.
Initial reports suggest that the confrontation began after some individuals demanded that Hawa Koomson leave the polling station, prompting her to allegedly discharge pepper spray in their direction. This act reportedly triggered the mob attack.
Journalists and bystanders present at the time were also caught in the melee, with some sustaining minor injuries as blows were thrown indiscriminately during the chaos.
In the aftermath of the assault, the Ghana Police Service deployed additional officers to the polling station to restore calm and ensure security.
Senior members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) were also seen arriving at the scene in an effort to de-escalate tensions and support the continuation of the voting process.
The Electoral Commission is yet to issue an official statement on the incident, which has raised renewed concerns about electoral violence and the safety of political figures and voters at polling centres.
