The Ghana Police Service has arrested several individuals dressed in brown uniforms for allegedly impersonating security personnel near the Awoshie DVLA polling station in the Ablekuma North Constituency, where a parliamentary election re-run is currently underway.
According to sources, the suspects were unable to provide valid identification when approached by officers assigned to maintain security at the polling centre. Their presence near the entrance of the voting area raised suspicion, prompting immediate police intervention.
The individuals were subsequently detained and taken to the Odorkor Police Station for further questioning and investigation.
Confirming the arrests in an interview with Citi News, John Desmond Nii Sowah Nai, the Municipal Chief Executive for Ga West and Dean of MMDCEs in the Greater Accra Region, said the individuals are believed not to be affiliated with any official state security agency.
“The police acted swiftly to apprehend the suspects after they failed to properly identify themselves. Preliminary indications suggest they may not belong to any recognised security institution,” he stated.
The police have launched a full investigation to verify the identities and intentions of the suspects. Authorities say more details will be provided as the probe progresses.
The arrests come amid heightened security during the rerun, which is being conducted in 19 polling stations within the constituency following disputes over the December 2024 general elections.
