GPRTU, GRTCC reject planned 20% Transport fare hike

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have rejected reports suggesting that public transport fares will be increased by 20 percent from June 2, 2026.

In a joint statement released on Monday, June 1, 2026, and signed by the General Secretaries of both organisations—Godfred Abulbire of the GPRTU and Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah of the GRTCC—the unions clarified that no consultation has been held with the Ministry of Transport regarding any upward adjustment in fares.

They stressed that the alleged decision did not follow the approved procedures for transport fare reviews.

“We wish to inform the general public that the executives of the road transport operators have not engaged the Ministry in any transport fare upward adjustment,” the statement said.

The unions described the reported increase as irregular and inconsistent with established protocols governing fare adjustments between transport operators and the Ministry of Transport.

“The decision by the supposed group is illegal as it has not gone through the fare adjustment protocol and procedure agreed between the Ministry of Transport and the road transport operators,” the statement added.

Their response follows earlier reports that some transport operators intended to implement a 20 percent fare hike due to rising operational expenses.

However, the GPRTU and GRTCC insist that no official authorization has been granted for such an increment.

They have therefore urged the public and all transport operators to disregard the announcement.

“We therefore wish to condemn this decision in no uncertain terms and request the general public to disregard the publication by the supposed group with the contempt it deserves,” the statement noted.

The unions further instructed drivers, vehicle owners, transport station managers, and other stakeholders to continue charging the existing approved fares until further notice.

“All road transport operators, unions, associations, drivers, vehicle owners, loading point managers and allied stakeholders are hereby requested to maintain the existing approved fares and to refrain from implementing any unilateral fare adjustments until further notice,” it said.

The GPRTU and GRTCC reaffirmed their commitment to protecting both commuters and transport operators while ensuring stability within the transport sector.
