“I don’t chase awards” — Adwoa Power speaks on award schemes
Gospel musician, Adwoa Kyerewaa, popularly known as Adwoa Power, has revealed that she has no interest in award schemes.
In an interview with Nana Ama Ntiful on the Oyerepa Breakfast Show, Adwoa Power stated that she is not focused on winning awards. According to her, while some people are passionate about receiving awards, she believes God is the ultimate rewarder of good work.
She explained that although she has received some awards in the past, she prefers to work hard and allow people to recognize and reward her efforts naturally rather than chasing awards herself.
She said: “That is why I am telling you that some people are interested in awards, and that is fine. But for me, I believe that if I do my work well, God will reward me. I have received some awards before; you can ask my manager. However, that is not my main concern. What matters to me is doing good work so that people will recognize and reward me willingly. I do not believe you should go around looking for awards yourself.”
Speaking about voting systems used in award schemes, Adwoa argued that they are not always fair and can create unnecessary issues. According to her, since human beings are behind the voting process, favoritism is unavoidable.
“Because human beings are behind the voting process, I do not completely believe in it. Naturally, everyone has their own favorites. So if the people involved do not favor you, things may not go your way. I am not directly involved, but from my understanding, since people are operating the system, anything is possible,” she asserted.
Adwoa Power also disclosed that she has never considered submitting her works to the organizers of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards. According to her, gospel musician Ernest Opoku once advised her not to focus too much on awards because it could distract her from her purpose in the music industry.
She said, “It has never really occurred to me. One of the brothers I work with, Ernest Opoku — God bless him wherever he is — once told me that there are certain things in this industry that can affect you if you focus too much on them. Sometimes, you may deserve something but not receive it, and that can discourage you. It can even create unnecessary problems between you and others, like we have seen happen recently. His words stayed with me. I know many people who have worked hard and gained cars, houses, and opportunities to travel because of their music. That is more beautiful to me. So people should rather recognize my work over the years and reward me themselves, instead of me chasing after awards. Overall, I am not too concerned about it.”
Adwoa Power is not the only entertainment figure to publicly show disinterest in award schemes. Industry players such as Shatta Wale, Kwaw Kese, Joey B, and Kwabena Kwabena have also expressed concerns about certain award schemes, with some citing a lack of transparency as their reason.
