Ghana Parliament ranked second most open in Africa — Majority Leader

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, says Ghana’s legislature is steadily emerging as one of the most transparent parliaments in Africa, following reforms aimed at improving public access to parliamentary proceedings.

He said Ghana currently ranks as the second most open parliament on the continent, with ongoing efforts to further strengthen accountability through live broadcasts and expanded media engagement.

Speaking at a Leadership Media Briefing on Friday, May 22, 2026, after the House resumed sitting, Mr. Ayariga noted that Parliament has made significant progress in opening up its work to citizens.

“In Africa, we are one of the most open Parliaments. In fact, we are number two in Africa. I believe that our aspiration is that we become number one in Africa,” he said.

He explained that Ghana’s classification is sometimes assessed alongside both unicameral and bicameral legislative systems, which can influence comparative rankings across countries.

“There is an issue whether we should be put in the category of those who practice the bicameral parliament. We have a unicameral Parliament. But they have number one, and we followed,” he noted.

Mr. Ayariga further highlighted the impact of live television coverage of parliamentary proceedings, saying it has significantly improved transparency and citizen engagement in governance.

“Now that we have live television broadcasting of our proceedings, in the next rating they might probably review that and Ghana may climb to the top as a parliament,” he added.

His comments come amid ongoing efforts by Parliament to enhance public trust and make legislative processes more accessible through digital platforms and wider media coverage.
