The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has directed the Queen Mother of the Agona Traditional Area, Nana Acheamponmaa Ntansa Yiadom, to oversee the selection of a rightful candidate for the vacant male stool.
The directive was issued on May 4, 2026, during a meeting of the Asanteman Council at the Manhyia Palace.
Otumfuo further instructed Nana Acheamponmaa Ntansa Yiadom and her kingmakers to present a suitable candidate to the traditional council within two weeks.
The decision follows a four-year delay in filling the vacant stool left by the late Nana Frimpong Anokye Ababio.
It also comes after a faction of the Agona royal family was previously barred from the stool over related disputes.
In July 2025, members of the royal family submitted a petition to the Asantehene seeking a reversal of the ban, through the Tepahene, Nana Adusei Atwenewa Ampem.
As part of conditions for considering the petition, Otumfuo instructed the Tepahene to engage the group and ensure the recovery of the Komfo Anokye Amoampong deity, which was allegedly seized during the dispute.
The Asantehene expressed concern over the conduct of the disputing parties, questioning their sincerity in resolving the matter.
“You have erred. You have not apologised and yet you are fighting over a stool. You are apologising, and yet you have not restored the property you seized. Where is the remorse?” he asked.
The Tepahene later informed the Council that his efforts to mediate the dispute had been unsuccessful, adding that the group denied possessing the stool in question and therefore withdrew from the case.
Following a review of the Agona stool’s genealogy and the prolonged dispute, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II cautioned against misconduct in traditional succession matters and condemned the actions of the parties involved.
