The government has revealed plans to build new Community Day Schools in Nima and Kasoa as part of measures to expand access to secondary education and address infrastructure challenges in the sector.

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu announced the initiative during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, July 20, explaining that the projects form part of the Secondary Education Transformation for Access, Relevance and Results (STARR-J) Project.

He said the move aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s directive to establish more Community Day Schools nationwide, modelled after the existing school at Kwabenya, to provide more opportunities for students.

“President Mahama believes we should promote the establishment of Community Day Schools similar to the one in Kwabenya. We will construct one in Nima and another in Kasoa under the STARR-J Project,” Mr Iddrisu stated.

The Education Minister further disclosed that the project will include the construction of a new Special Needs Education facility in Ho, in the Volta Region, to improve access to specialised learning support for persons with disabilities.

He said the facility would help create better educational opportunities for learners with special needs within the region.

According to Mr Iddrisu, the STARR-J Project is aimed at upgrading infrastructure in senior high schools, senior high technical schools and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions while improving the accessibility, relevance and quality of secondary education in Ghana.

He added that the initiative forms part of government’s broader efforts to strengthen the country’s education system and provide more students with quality learning environments.
