A majority of Ghanaians say they are satisfied with the direction the country is heading, according to a new nationwide survey conducted by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA).
The survey found that 58 percent of respondents expressed happiness with the current state of affairs, a result the IEA says reflects the macroeconomic improvements recorded in 2025.
In a statement accompanying the findings, the IEA noted that the Ghanaian cedi appreciated by approximately 32 percent against the U.S. dollar between 2024 and 2025. The strengthening of the local currency, together with broader macroeconomic stability, helped ease inflationary pressures, leading to reductions in fuel prices at the pump and lower costs for some imported consumer goods.
As a result, inflation declined sharply from 23.8 percent in 2024 to 5.4 percent in 2025.
The report also cited other positive economic developments that may have shaped public perception. These include a significant reduction in the country’s debt-to-GDP ratio, which fell from 61.8 percent at the end of December 2024 to 45 percent by the end of October 2025.
Additionally, the average lending rate dropped from 30.2 percent to 22.2 percent over the same period, easing borrowing costs, while the economy showed signs of gradual recovery from the impact of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme.
According to the IEA, these gains have contributed to the gradual return of public confidence, with many Ghanaians becoming increasingly hopeful about the country’s prospects under the new government.
However, the report cautioned that optimism remains fragile. About 34 percent of respondents indicated they are unhappy with the way things are going in the country, highlighting persistent concerns among a significant minority.
The IEA stressed that this level of dissatisfaction underscores the need for policies that address issues affecting the daily lives of citizens.
The nationwide public opinion poll was conducted between December 20 and December 28, 2025, across all 16 regions of Ghana, with responses from 1,022 participants.
