The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has announced the start of a nationwide vehicle fire extinguisher compliance exercise, effective Thursday, December 18, 2025, aimed at ensuring that all vehicles on Ghana’s roads are fitted with functional and easily accessible fire extinguishers.
According to the Service, the exercise will be led by the GNFS Fire Safety Compliance Taskforce in collaboration with the National Road Safety Authority and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, the GNFS explained that the operation is intended to enforce the legal requirement for drivers and vehicle owners to carry at least one GNFS-certified or embossed portable fire extinguisher in their vehicles.
As part of the exercise, officers will conduct on-the-spot fire safety inspections, issue GNFS certification tags to vehicles with compliant fire extinguishers, and offer technical guidance on the correct use of extinguishers in line with the Ghana National Fire Service Act, 1997 (Act 537).
The Service also indicated that it will engage transport unions and associations nationwide to educate drivers and vehicle owners on fire prevention, preparedness, and safe response to vehicle fire incidents.
Vehicle owners and drivers are expected to ensure that their fire extinguishers are in good working condition by checking pressure gauges, expiry dates, and tamper seals. Extinguishers must also be securely mounted and positioned for easy access.
In addition, motorists will receive training on the safe use of portable fire extinguishers and will be encouraged to carry other essential safety equipment, such as warning triangles and first-aid kits.
The GNFS emphasised that rapid response is critical during vehicle fires, noting that having a certified and functional fire extinguisher within reach can prevent minor incidents from escalating into major tragedies.
The Service reaffirmed its commitment to improving road safety nationwide through sustained public education and strict enforcement of fire safety regulations.
