2024 Polls: NPP’s defeat began in 2022 due to arrogance of power – Kennedy Agyapong
Presidential aspirant Kennedy Agyapong has stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lost the 2024 general elections long before voting day, attributing the party’s defeat to what he termed the “arrogance of power,” soaring inflation, and the rapid depreciation of the cedi against the US dollar.
Speaking in an interview on UTV, Agyapong said the sharp decline of the local currency had a devastating impact on businesses, particularly those engaged in import and export, leading to widespread public frustration.
“When the cedi started performing badly against the dollar, it seriously affected businesses. Importers and exporters were hit hard, and Ghanaians decided to punish the NPP as far back as 2022,” he stated.
According to Agyapong, he made several attempts to offer guidance and solutions to help reposition the party, but his advice was largely ignored by the leadership.
“I was sidelined. I gave suggestions to put the party on the right path, but they were rejected. I kept warning them, but nobody listened,” he said.
Responding to claims that he may have contributed to the party’s electoral decline, Agyapong denied any wrongdoing, insisting that he acted responsibly as a party member and lawmaker.
“No, I did not contribute to the loss. I was an MP on the party’s ticket and proposed measures that could have cushioned the situation, but none of them were implemented. I focused on my role, yet the leadership ignored advice that could have made a difference,” he added.
He further criticized the party’s approach to economic management, stressing that the handling of inflation and the depreciation of the cedi fueled public dissatisfaction and ultimately cost the NPP the election.
