The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to ending illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, in the region, stressing that this time the fight is backed by firm political will.
Speaking to journalists in Parliament, Dr. Amoakohene said key areas such as riverbanks, forest reserves, and roadsides have been designated as no-go zones for mining activities.
He revealed that a regional task force has been activated and placed on high alert to clamp down on illegal mining operations across the Ashanti Region.
“We have mounted strong surveillance across the region, and our task force is ready to act. What makes this fight different from previous efforts is the strong political will we have now,” he stated.
The Minister called on traditional authorities and residents to actively support the renewed campaign, noting that community involvement is critical to safeguarding natural resources and protecting the environment.
Dr. Amoakohene also highlighted ongoing initiatives by the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council to promote effective governance, enhance revenue mobilisation, and accelerate local development.
He reaffirmed that protecting water bodies and forest reserves remains a top regional priority, describing them as essential to sustainable development and the well-being of communities.
