Tension is escalating in the Asawase community of the Ashanti Region following the fatal shooting of an unidentified man by unknown assailants on a motorbike—just days after the assassination of the Kusasi Chief of the Ashanti Region in the same vicinity.
According to eyewitness accounts, the latest victim was shot by two men riding a motorbike, who opened fire and fled the scene immediately after the attack.
Security forces, including police and military personnel, have since been deployed to the area, which has been cordoned off. Crime scene investigators are combing the location for evidence as part of ongoing investigations.
The shooting comes on the heels of the July 22 killing of Abdul-Malik Azenbe, the Kusasi Chief of the Ashanti Region and Chief of the Kadi Divisional Area in Binduri. Azenbe was shot at his home near the Asawase F-line Community Centre by gunmen, one of whom was reportedly armed with an AK-47 rifle. He was rushed to the hospital but pronounced dead on arrival.
His assassination shocked the local community and traditional leaders, prompting promises of a full-scale investigation by the Ashanti Regional Police Command.
While authorities have not yet confirmed any link between the two incidents, the close proximity in both time and location has raised alarm among residents, who fear a possible escalation of violence.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has not released an official statement on the most recent shooting, but sources indicate that security in Asawase has been significantly heightened as investigations continue.
Community members are calling for swift action from law enforcement to restore calm and bring the perpetrators to justice.
